Not only is Ari afraid of garden hoses, but he is also afraid of water and sprinklers. So, I set a sprinkler in the arena and brought Ari in. Together, we approached the sprinkler and when his fear showed up, we would stop. When he relaxed again, we turned and walked away. We approached the sprinkler many times and with each pass, Ari’s confidence built and the fear became smaller.

Debbie stands beside Ari, a brown horse, as they approach a spraying sprinkler in a sandy arena during a confidence-building exercise.
Ari & the Sprinkler: Building Confidence

Fear can easily overwhelm us and keep us from doing something we truly want to do. How is it that fear builds and becomes so much bigger in our minds than it really is? Like Ari, when we find the courage to take just one step at a time, we may look back and realize that somewhere along the way, our fear no longer feels quite so big. Fear can limit what we think we can do, yet each time we choose to move through it, we discover a little more of our own courage, strength, and confidence.

What is one small step you can take today toward something fear has been holding you back from? Sometimes, taking that first step is a little easier when we don’t have to take it alone. Building confidence takes time, patience, and sometimes a little encouragement along the way. The horses and I are here to walk alongside you as you face the fear that is holding you back.
