Ari & the Hose: Overcoming Fear

We have been working with Ari to overcome his fear of hoses. On this particular day, I decided to create a loop with the hose for Ari to walk through. He saw the loop and immediately went into fear – he snorted at it, lowered his head and shifted his entire body to his back feet. Next, he tried to back away from it, but each time I gently encouraged him to move closer. Then instead of walking through the loop, Ari walked around it; avoiding it altogether. Once he placed one foot in the loop and then backed out again. Other times, he planted his feet and resisted moving towards it at all. After many attempts, Ari finally chose to walk through the loop and it was so easy!

I felt this experience is such a metaphor for life. We put so much effort into resisting, avoiding, or ignoring the loops in our lives, but when we finally commit to walking through the loop, it is so much easier than we thought. What loop are you avoiding or resisting right now?
