Arena Time: The Joy of Play

I often let my horses out to be together in the arena. When I first got Ari, he would look at me as if to ask, “What am I supposed to do?”

He would just stand in the arena, but over time, he has learned that all he has to do is be a horse, something I think got lost in his desire to please past owners. He is getting it, and occasionally, he will even actually buck. It delights me to witness him being a horse!

Spartan, on the other hand, loves his time in the arena to run and buck and visit all the other horses. His fun-loving spirit has rubbed off on Ari, and they have learned to play together.

They are like brothers, tussling with each other. Eventually, Spartan takes off, and Ari joins him as they run around the arena, often side by side. Sometimes, they feed off each other’s energy and start running even faster. Then, one of them turns and runs the other way, and the other must hustle to catch up.

It is so fun to watch them play together.

As adults, we can become so caught up in the seriousness of life that we forget the joy and freedom that come from simply allowing ourselves to play.

What would play look like for you today?
